Going Green May 2015

Before we know it the streets will fill with jet skis, campers, boats and visitors.  We will welcome them with open arms as we remind them to leave only their FOOTPRINTS and pack out what they pack in.  Creating the clean environment in our town also seeps out to the lake.   We know that our community is very serious about maintaining our recycling levels, picking up cigarette butts and general litter.

This past month we held another successful cleanup for the first time at Western Resources Group.  We would like to thank everyone who took the time to recycle their personal papers in the Shred Day and all of those who participated in the electronic recycling.  These efforts constitute the momentum which our community is becoming the leader in Western Nebraska for school, community and county recycling.

Once again, we are proud to announce the winners of the Pepsico Recycle Rally are from Western Nebraska.  South Platte School district took first place in the Challenge division followed closely by Prairie View in the Ogallala Public School district.  This is an incredible accomplishment for the students in both schools and we commend you efforts.

Keep Keith County Beautiful is pleased to announce that we will be holding two more large events this year to dispose of tires and household hazardous waste.  Our Tire collection will be held this summer at the Keith County fairgrounds, August 6-8.  Then in October we will hold the HHW collection, again at WRG.

It is important that we get all of the tires collected and counted this year, as the future depends on the success of this program.  We need to have a strong showing collecting tires from farms, ranches and outlying areas.  If you know someone who has a need to get rid of tires but not the ability to transport them to the facility, please let us know as we may be able to assist people.

The Scrap Tire Collection will allow you to bring your used or loose tires for cars or farm equipment tires to WRG and we will collect them for transport to the recycling facility. These tires must be rimless so plan ahead.  Let all your friends and family know about this event.

We will also be placing more cigarette litter receptacles out by the lake this summer.  We are seeking to have not butts on the beach.  If you have a smoker in your inner circle, send them my way and we will give them a free beach ash tray, or a smoker’s pocket ashtray.

This summer, continue to keep track of your aluminum cans and plastic # 1 and # 2 for next year’s Prairie View recycle rally.  We will continue to represent our region in the greenest ways possible.  Thanks to all of you who have contributed to our programs, our promotions and our effort to Keep Keith County Beautiful.
